(The) Writer's Mind: Daily Schedule for Unit 3.
The Lyric Essay and Cover Memo (weeks 13-16)
Week 13
Monday, April 10
Recommended Reading: Alan Watts' The Book on the Taboo Against Knowing Who you Are. Chapters 1-4.
|
As you read Watts, pay special attention to the kinds of sentences he uses and the effects those sentences produce in his audience.
Also recommended reading:
Charles Guignon's On Being Authentic. Nietzsche's "On Truth and Lying in a Nonmoral Sense." |
Looking ahead to writing the cover memo: Reflect on Watts and the figural register in the lyric genre; reflect on your development as a writer writing your way into the lyric genre. How have its conventions challenged you and how are you adapting rhetorically to enter the genre, to invent yourself as a writer in the lyric genre?
Wednesday, April 12
Recommended reading: Joseph Campbell's "Mythological Themes in Creative Literature and Art."
Also recommended: Chapter 6 from Michael Carter's Where Writing Begins.
